The History of Söderköpings Brunn

The activities at Söderköpings Brunn date from the time of St Ragnhild’s spring which was renowned as early as The Middle Ages. In the niche at "the castle" there is a figure representing St Ragnhild, who according to legend was an innocent nun who was condemned to death.

This spring has been of great importance to Söderköping, not just because of the treatments of illness, but also as a source of water for the town. It was said that the spring could provide 180.000 litres of pure crystal clear water per 24 hour period.

The organised health spa activities were started in 1719 by provincial doctor Magnus Gabriel von Block, who was responsible for setting up the spring and who built a small guest house.

In 1774 Söderköpings Brunn was granted a royal charter and rights by Gustav III.

The most famous person who has been operative at the Brunn was Dr. Johan Olof Lagberg who was Superintendent from 1823-1856. He instituted cold water treatments in continental style in 1842, and this made the spa the most important one in Sweden, and people flocked here from all over the country.

Cold water treatments are perhaps thought of as rather harsh today - what do you think of a water enema at a temperature of 8 degrees and total immersion in cold water at 04.30 in the morning?

Today Söderköpings Brunn is a four star hotell with all the comfort you'll need.
